Jacques Germain (1915–2001) was a prominent French painter and a key figure in post-war Abstraction Lyrique. Born on January 13, 1915, in Paris, he trained at the Académie Moderne under Fernand Léger and Amédée Ozenfant before studying at the Bauhaus in Dessau, where he was instructed by Wassily Kandinsky. His early career was disrupted by World War II; captured and held as a prisoner in Germany for several years, he resumed painting only after the war. Germain made his public debut at the Salon des Surindépendants in 1947. His mature work is celebrated for its vibrant palette and lyrical, gestural forms, embodying the expressive freedom of Abstraction Lyrique. He exhibited widely in Paris, with solo shows at Galerie Maeght, Galerie Pierre, and Galerie Kriegel, among others. A major retrospective of his oeuvre was mounted at the Couvent des Cordeliers in Paris in 1997, cementing his legacy within French abstract painting.
